Food Waste Diversion: Ritz-Carlton Chicago Leads the Way

The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago’s Food Waste Diversion Program Reduces Environmental Impact for Sustainable Meetings and Events

The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago, has launched a new food waste diversion program for meetings and events. The program is made possible through its management partner, Sage Hospitality Group, which recently partnered with BioGreen360 to roll out the first phase of the collaboration.

By leveraging BioGreen360s integrated technology solution, The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago, will divert 100% of its food waste from landfills. The program complements a slate of sustainability practices the hotel has implemented, including replacing single-use bath products with refillable options, following its Responsible Sourcing Guide when selecting food and beverage vendors, and incorporating LED lighting in guest rooms and public spaces.

The launch of the hotel’s new food waste program comes on the heels of BioGreen360’s May 24 announcement that it had entered into a national partnership with Sage to develop a closed-loop program to divert 100% of its hotel portfolio’s food waste and integrate the residual material into an array of all-natural compost and fertilizer products.

Why this matters: The new food waste program is a significant step forward for the hotel industry in its efforts to reduce its environmental impact. It also shows the growing demand from meeting and event planners for sustainable venues and solutions.

What you can do: If planning a meeting or event, ask about the venue’s sustainability practices. You can also support businesses that are working to reduce food waste.
